Streaming News in Taiwan? Hey! My grandfather is here visiting from China and he wants to see streaming news broadcasted from Taiwan about Taiwanese news. Is there any free websites that will allow me to connect to any Taiwanese news networks? Thanks guys this means a lot!!!
Why did MSNBC and CNN stop reporting Taiwan events? We're getting pummelled by Typhoon Krosa at the moment. 3 weeks ago another typhoon hit here, MSNBC and CNN only reported the typhoon AFTER it cleared Taiwan and headed for China. Did they cave into pressure from Beijing to avoid Taiwan news? Or do they just have a different map than us?
What is the legal status of the Republic of China on Taiwan? The Republic of China on Taiwan is often in the news these days, especially since it is vigorously trying to obtain increased international recognition. When the ROC was founded in 1912, Taiwan was part of Japan. Although on Sept. 2, 1945, Gen. MacArthur directed Chiang Kai-Shek to go to Taiwan to accept the surrender of Japanese troops, those surrender ceremonies did not mark the transfer of sovereignty of Taiwan to China. In fact, the Oct. 25, 1945, surrender ceremonies only marked the beginning of the military occupation of Taiwan. When did the military occupation end? No one seems able to provide a concrete answer. (Perhaps Taiwan is still under military occupation even today.) Today, many people in Taiwan claim that they are entitled to the right of self-determination under the UN Charter. Unfortunately the UN doesn't agree, and has consistently refused ROC-Taiwan's application for membership. So, what is the legal status of the ROC on Taiwan?
Seatle animal organization helps with Taiwan stray dogs? Does anyone know what the animal organization in Seatle is that helps with Taiwan stray dogs? They take stray/abuse dogs from Taiwan and do adoption in Seatle. Any info about the organization available on the website? Or any news you can find about it? Sorry DP, I'm looking for the one in Seatle, not in Taiwan. An animal organication in SEATLE that helps with stray dogs from Taiwan. I need to know the name of the Seatle organization.
Is Taiwan and China going to war soon? Recently ive been hearing news that China and Taiwan is going to war soon I as a Taiwanese citizen studying in China is afraid that Taiwan will really bomb Shanghai and other chinese ports. Im also worried that China would use its neuclear weapons against taiwan which will possibly wipe out half the population. So my question is: Is it true that China and Taiwan is going to war soon and if so which other countries would be involved and whos side they'll be on.
What are the complete details of the new federal lawsuit claiming that Taiwan is a US overseas territory? According to some Chinese language news reports from the southern city of Gaoxiong/Kaohsiung which a friend of mine in Taiwan has emailed to me, a group of Taiwanese people have filed suit in federal court in Washington D.C. against the US government, claiming that Taiwan is an overseas territory of the USA, and that the Taiwanese people are therefore entitled to various fundamental rights under US laws. I am not exactly sure of the details of the case, but the Chinese news articles say it relies heavily on international legal documents such as the San Francisco Peace Treaty of 1952. As I will be involved in a research project about Taiwan in the near future, and have to submit an outline of my research proposal by mid-December, it would be most desirable if I could obtain full details about this case. I would also like to obtain a copy of the documents filed with the court and other supporting historical and legal information. Any assistance would be appreciated.
How do Americans look upon Taiwan? I think that almost everyone knows Taiwan, as there is a lot of news. However, according to my friends in Taiwan, They told me that people there are quite friendly but politics is a big mess. Because I feel like going to Taiwan to be an English teacher, I hope that you guys can tell me more regarding Taiwan. I want to know more concerning Taiwan.
about new relations between China and Taiwan? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7419780.stm 1)How does develop this "new chapter of peace" between homeland China and Taiwan? 2)For example ,2008 Beijing Olympics is it anothre the good chance for new peace? 3)As for you,is it good example for North and South Korea? Thanks in advance and salute from Türkiye! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-Z2bVuEYUY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YAvfxA6a94
WAR: between China and taiwan and the 2008 Olympic Threat.? So there's been a lot of talk going on about how Taiwan is threatening China about the 2008 Olympics. It's been said that Taiwan plans to do something big and bad at the 2008 Olympics in china. That way, it'll scare away the other nations, and of course all that money the Chinese invested on Olympics would be a waste if the Olympics end up getting canceled, (this would kill the Chinese economy). If this were to happen, China would probably declare war on Taiwan. So my question is, Do you think this will/ could happen? and if it WERE to happen, Do you think the U.S. would get involved? But before you answer read this: "The trade gap of goods to and from China now accounts for 40.2 percent of the nation's overall trade gap" (http://money.cnn.com/2007/09/11/news/economy/trade/index.htm). So do you think the U.S. would REALLY get involved? I mean we don't want China as an enemy, that's for sure, but would we really give up what the U.S. government is made of (demorcracy) for business and trade?
Why Does China Think It Owns Taiwan? Isn't kind of dumb for China to think it still owns Taiwan? It has been over 50 years since Taiwan has had its own government. Under international law, it take just 50 years for a country to form. China also used the same law as proof of ownership of Tibet. http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/editorials/archives/2007/08/17/2003374626 To Hao Li: Hawaii chose to become a U.S. state. In 1959, over 90% of Hawaiians chose for Hawaii to become a state and stop being a territory. And polls show most people in Taiwan don't want to be part of China. "140000 votes cast, less than 8000 rejected the Admission Act of 1959." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Admission_of_Hawaii_Act
Copyright Question: Use of News Broadcast Soundclip in Song? Is it copyright infringement to use a soundclip that was originally broadcasted on a news channel in an original song that will be publicly released and sold? More info: I found a soundclip on youtube. It's from a news channel. It was recorded on the street (kind of an interview) and there were other news channels there recording the same thing. I would like to use a soundclip from this broadcast in an original song. My thinking is this: It was on the street, so any number of people could have recorded the voice, to include the other news channels, passers-bye, myself, etc. So there's no way to prove where exactly the soundclip came from. Another reason I think it might be ok is b/c I've heard plenty of club songs with news soundclips (for example, of George Bush speaking at an interview) that I feel couldn't have been cleared. Any references to the law would be helpful. (This may destroy everything I wrote...but the recording was in Taiwan, broadcasted in Taiwan, not in US
Taiwan: Renegade Province or Independent Country? What do you think? I've lived in Taiwan for a long time. I'm just curious what kind of impression, if any, you've formed in your own country based on what you've heard from your favorite news organizations. What's your opinion of former president Chen's pro-independence efforts? What about the new president Ma? I'm most interested in what non-Chinese people think. If you're Chinese, I think I probably already know what your answer is. To coordinates - TW: Yeah, I've read, forgotten, reread and reforgotten a lot of Taiwan's history, but I wasn't asking for factual information about Taiwan so much as what impressions and opinions people in other places have formed based on what they've learned through media outlets. From your name, I'm guessing you are here in Taiwan or have lived here. Clearly your knowledge of Taiwan differs from that of the *average* American/Brit/Australian/etc. To coordinates - TW: Yeah, I've read, forgotten, reread and reforgotten a lot of Taiwan's history, but I wasn't asking for factual information about Taiwan so much as what impressions and opinions people in other places have formed based on what they've learned through media outlets. Can Taiwan really host foreign visitors who plan to stay there? Lots of basic problems here. Hygiene issues, dog droppings, scooters, dishonest ads.... See this: http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/archives/2006/05/02/2003305708 http://www.chinapost.com.tw/opinion/inc/p_detail.asp?id=197 maybe taiwan is not worse than north america, but i never said i'm from north america.
Lastest news? Which online newspaper that I can find a lot of latest news about celebreties all over the world, especially in Asia (Korea, China, Taiwan, Hongkong..)
Related work to apply journalism graduate school? I'm a senior majored in English in Taiwan, and planning to go aboard to study journalism graduate school. So, I'm wondering what kind of compositions or work should I write to apply for journalism. Is it something about perspectives or reflections on news or social issues? If there is a sample for me to better understand it, it will be a big help for me! Thanks!
China vs. Taiwan: Communism stealing freedom? I'm posting this question again, only because I was curious if I would get a different response elsewhere. So excuse annoyance. I simply wanted to know if anyone has equipped themselves with the knowledge of what's really happening to Taiwan, if they are at all concerned, and what are their opinions. If you are bilingual as I am and check taiwanese news sites and etc, you would know how citizens in taiwan are revolting. Is the rest of the world as ignorant as I assume? Is it because it's China hostile take over that put other countries in fear of taking any UN action? If you know of any sites where I can furtehr this discussion on this topic, thank you.
I have to write a 10pg paper on something international conflicty. Any good ideas? 1) Obvious things like Israel-Palestine, China-Taiwan, Sudan, I can't do b/c people already have them. I was thinking something like Sri Lankan civil war, censorship in China and how it compares to the rest of the world, or maybe the way secular governments allow/disallow religious 'violations' of law (what's that called?). But I'm not that up to date on the news so I can't come up with many ideas.
Why many chinese kill their ex after the break up of a relationship? Why many chinese kill their ex after the break up of a relationship? That happens a lot here in Taiwan. After failing a relationship, many chinese or Taiwanese chose to kill their ex partners. Or when people failing to get their girls. Why is that?? As for as i see, not many western people do that, right? it does happen in Taiwan on a regular basis, not frequent, but it does happen. When Chinese TV praised director Ang Lee, why were parts of his speech mentioning Taiwan & Hong Kong cut out? http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/pr/fr/-/2/hi/entertainment/4781586.stm The Chinese media praised Taiwan-born Ang Lee for his best director Oscar win but state TV cut part of his speech mentioning China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Brokeback Mountain will not be released in Chinese cinemas and can only been seen on pirate DVD. The Chinese government refused to include it on a list of foreign films approved for domestic cinemas, a move that stops just short of an outright ban. Hong Kong's Apple Daily newspaper contrasted Lee's success with China's controls on popular culture. "China cannot produce a director like Ang Lee," it claimed. The paper praised the US for allowing creative freedom. The 51-year-old director started out in film in his early 20s after graduating from the National Taiwan College of Arts.
Are the Chinese news programs stirring up war tensions between the US and China deliberately? As an American Chinese, I used to watch the Chinese news programs reporting on military matters on Satelite TV and noticed that the Chinese love to stir up war tensions between us and China deliberately! They kept reporting on war strategies and mobilization of their armed forces to against repel US attacks and also how they could cripple our forces so no one could get in their way to reclaim the island of Taiwan! The news also spoke about how they could make use of their military capacities to defeat the Taiwanese forces to make way for their retake of Taiwan! These were just a bunch of anti-US and anti-Taiwan propaganda 'crap' being broadcasted on national television! What are your takes on that? I realized that a majority of mainland Chinese are anti-American despite our ex-President Bush's efforts to improve Sino-US ties! Do they really hated us so much because we simply live on very different ideologies! Looks like the Cold War 'thing' still lingers! This time it's between the US and China! It's going to get worse after Obama spoke of about his views on Communism in his inauguration speech!
On CTV news this evening there was an article that scientist are expecting that the west coast of? washington/british columbia could experience a significant earthquake in the next two weeks . This is apparently a trend that they have been noticing for some time...after this 2 week period of increased possibility...we should be 'safe' again until April 2008. Does anyone know anything more about this......??? CTV.ca News Staff Experts warn that British Columbia's southern coast has entered a two-week window of increased probability in which a major earthquake could occur. While the chances of that happening are still very slim, such an event could trigger a tsunami equal to the size and the strength of what hit Sumatra in 2004. Seismologists with B.C.'s Geological Survey of Canada made the announcement after measuring a series of minor tremors along the Cascadia Subduction Zone -- a long, sloping fault that stretches from northern California to Vancouver Island. The zone, which separates the Juan de Fuca Plate and the North American Plate, has a very large fault area which can produce large earthquakes with a magnitude of 9.0 or greater if a rupture were to occur. "Where the Juan de Fuca plate is subducting beneath the North American plate, and where those plates are touching, it's locked," earthquake seismologist Alison Bird told CTV.ca. "To the east of that, every 14 months we see low frequency tremor activity ... sliding along that zone, which is almost directly beneath us," Bird told CTV.ca in a phone interview from the Geological Survey of Canada headquarters in Sidney, B.C., near Victoria. "When that happens, we believe what it's doing is loading additional stress onto the locked zone. So if that locked zone happens to be close to critical, it could theoretically trigger a mega earthquake." Bird and her colleagues noticed a phenomenon, called Episodic Tremor and Slip (ETS), occurs in the area about every 14 months -- each time adding stress to the fault line and increasing the likelihood of a major earthquake. The seismologists started detecting strong ETS movement last Friday. If a major quake should occur, said seismologist Gary Rogers: "You're looking at a big tsunami happening at the same time. The west coast of Vancouver Island, the Washington and Oregon coasts, are all vulnerable to a force powerful enough to certainly bring down buildings. Rogers told CTV.ca that the area of the Cascadia Subduction Zone is comparable in size to the rupture zone of the Dec. 26, 2004 earthquake in the Pacific Ocean that triggered a devastating tsunami in the Sumatra-Andaman Islands. Another comparable scenario, said Roberts, is the 1964 earthquake that struck Alaska. "Most of the bigger, taller buildings and structures like bridges suffered some damage, whereas most of the small structures such as houses suffered hardly any damage. So there's an analogy which is probably what is going to happen in Vancouver, Seattle and Victoria." While larger structures that were built a number of years ago are most vulnerable, continued Roberts, recently-built structures are better off, "because what we do is put this type of knowledge into building codes. Older, bigger structures are more vulnerable because they don't have the present day knowledge built into their design." The last known great earthquake in the Pacific Northwest -- the Cascadia Earthquake -- struck in January, 1700. While such phenomena are infrequent -- with a cycle of every few hundred years -- the region is due for a big one. The Geological Survey of Canada added for an average week, the chances of a mega thrust earthquake occurring is 0.0005 per cent (or 1/200,000); during a week of Episodic Tremor and Slip this increases to 0.026 per cent (or 1/4,000) -- a 50-fold increase. "We are at a time when (a megathrust quake) could occur, but it could also be 100 years from now," Bird told CTV.ca, adding that it's never too soon to get organized and take precautions. "What I encourage people to do is whenever we're about to have an ETS, it's a good time to use that as a trigger to go over your emergency plan with your family to make sure that your earthquake kit is full stocked," she said. "Sometimes things get taken from earthquake kits to use for other things. So replenish the food and water and other equipment. It's just a good practice, a good reminder, like when the clocks change you check the battery in your smoke detector. For the west coast, you check your earthquake kit every 14 months." Should B.C. escape the big one this time, the next window of higher earthquake risk will occur around April 2008. Rogers said seismologists haven't figured out why the ETS phenomenon happens every 14 months in the Pacific Northwest. "And interestingly enough it's 14 months fairly regularly here for the last decade as we looked back at our old records," he said. "But in Japan, it seems to be about one year; in New Zealand it appears to be about every few years; and Alaska every 18 months. We don't know if it's because of different subduction zones, or it's about where we are in the earthquake cycle." What countries still recognize Taiwan? I was reading bbc, and i came across a news about costa rica ending diplomatic ties with Taiwan, so there are only 24 nations still recognize Taiwanese government. Anybody know who they are?
Ship spat between Taiwan and Japan? I’ve been watching the news lately and the ship incident is such a hot issue. Although I keep up with the updates, I still don’t quite understand what’s going on. The fishermen in Taiwan think that they’ve been mistreated while the representative for Japan believes that they don’t need to apologize. Did the collision happen in Japan’s “territorial sea”? I’m so confused and very worried about the relations between Taiwan and Japan. Hopefully, this will be resolved soon…
How do I contact a live person at the INS? I have filed the I-130 and the application for extension and a work appl. for my wife, who is from Taiwan. We have reciepts showing they have the info. No news for the interview and my wife's visa is up as of Sept 12th, either she must leave the US, or we need to get an OK from INS. But, their 800 number has NO WAY to reach a live person. I only need to know if she can stay past the visa date, since we are married and we have filed the paperwork, but if not, and she has to leave, I need to know. We do not want any problems, but we are now very worried. Can someone help? Thanks.
Is a typhoon strong enough to topple a hotel? Just saw the news of the typhoon that rocked Taiwan again my heart goes out to those who lost loved ones and so many hurt or injured and such a loss of property and personal belongings. I did not know that a Typhoon ot Tsunami could actually knock down a hotel and the waves of water are undermining bridges and massive super-structures, homes etc.Help if you can.
US sent weapons to Taiwan a mistake? Ok, the news has been spread that US accidently sent fuses over to Taiwan by mistake? do you actually believe that it's true? I mean, that's a heck lots weapons there and how could they missed out on that?
Is Taiwan any of our business, if china wants to get control of its rogue states should we get in the way? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070526/ap_on_go_ot/us_china_military The USA has a great personal history of supressing states rights. we also have a great track record of protecting select democracies. If we dont like how the vote went we try to change it. right now I get it. We leave Tibet out to dry because its not a democracy (I think they pretty much go with the theocracy thing) and they arent freedom loving people... Stop with the dogmatic ignorance.
Where is 協中街 in Taiwan? I saw an internet posting abt eating mushroom in Taiwan. http://udn.com/NEWS/TRAVEL/TRAS3/4016457.shtml Where is this place? Where else in Taipei or Taichung can i eat it?
Why are we "obligated by law to defend Taiwan? I just read this article http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070930/ap_on_re_as/taiwan_politics I am confused by the statement that we are obligated by law yet we condemn the constant pushes from Taiwan to declare independence. Why not change our policy and stay the hell out of it? Otherwise risk a conflict with a country with a billion people dedicated to the the idea that they are the future rulers of the world. This is a tough one. I mean, after living on the mainland for quite sometime I get this ever growing feeling that the people are just itching for an excuse to prove their ever growing military. Any thoughts???
What is your 1st thought when you read what i just read over the tv news...? Its horrible, where a cook fried the poor fish in hot oil and covered its head with towel using some technique learned in China. And then it was served over the table where a man prick its meat with chopsticks and i can see the fish head goggling with mouth open while the rest of its body already been fried and ate to a good extend. The news come with the video and it was said that these fish can usually survive in such condition (with its head) for about 30 minutes. The restaurant said that they are trying to provide fresh servings. This happened in Taiwan.
Where should I teach? China or Taiwan? I want to learn Mandarin so I decided to go to either China or Taiwan. Of course I have to work there to finance my studies. I recently received two job offers as an English teacher: one from a school in Beijing and one from Taipei. I'm torn because I know both countries speak Mandarin. I need your thoughts on which city you would choose and why. Is it safer in Taipei? Beijing's Mandarin is "more" standard or more desirable? More opportunities in Taipei? China's communism isn't good news for foreigners? I appreciate your answers! Thanks!
