What can you tell me about Taiwan Vegetarian Inc. and/or other stores that sell good vegetarian seafood cheap?

I've decided to become a lacto-ovo vegetarian. But I also really like seafood and hope that there are substitutes that are close to the real thing. Most of the websites I've been able to find have hubs too far away from where I live, hence outrageous shipping charges. The only store I could find that has cheap shipping is http://www.taiwanvegetarian.com Has anyone ever purchased anything from them, and if so, is it good? I'm especially interested in their shrimp, squid, crab, and smoked drumsticks, but if they have any other stuff that's good, please let me know! I have also heard that a lot of Taiwanese manufacturers sneak meat into their "vegetarian" products. Can this website be trusted in this respect? I've never tasted vegetarian seafood, either. Is it worth the effort trying to locate it, or is it nothing like the real thing? What other good veg seafood products are there? Thanks in advance.

  1. I go to T&T Supermarket with my boyfriend - it's called 99 Ranch Market in the States - it's a chain of Asian supermarkets. I've bought "shrimp" that are based on Yuba roll, which tasted really good - but not like shrimp at all. I've also had that fake tuna. Ew. Not good. It tasted and felt kind of like what I imagine cat food to be like. The best meat replacers for veggies, I think, are chicken, duck (if you can get it) and ground beef. I've never tried a seafood replacer that was any good.
  2. What I would tell you about Taiwan Vegetarian Inc. is that I wouldn't buy food online from a company that doesn't list the ingredients or nutrition of any of their products, whether they are vegetarian or not. Since you're buying frozen food, it would be better to find something at least somewhat close to where you live and go there. Inspect the merchandise and then buy in bulk so you don't have to make frequesnt trips. Pack that freezer!
